Gangtok — the cloud-kissed capital of Sikkim
, perched at 1,650 metres in the Eastern
Himalayas — is one of India's most beloved hill destinations. Clean
streets, vibrant monasteries, glacial lakes, Himalayan viewpoints, and
one of the most spectacular mountain drives in the country make it
a destination that visitors return to again and again. And for nearly
every traveller coming from the plains, the journey begins at one of
three points: New Jalpaiguri (NJP) Railway Station,
Siliguri, or Bagdogra Airport (IXB)
— and from any of these three, the first and most important booking
you need is a reliable cab to Gangtok.
The distance from NJP to Gangtok is approximately
120 km. From Siliguri to Gangtok
it is about 114 km. From Bagdogra Airport
to Gangtok it is approximately 125 km.
By cab via the scenic NH10 Teesta Valley route, the
journey takes around 4 to 5 hours — one of the most
beautiful drives in all of India.
At EasyGoCab,
we offer the most trusted Siliguri to Gangtok cab service
and NJP to Gangtok cab — with fixed fares, verified
mountain-route drivers, and complete support at the Rangpo check-post.
Book in under 60 seconds. Starting at just ₹2,499.
Why Book a Private Cab from Siliguri / NJP to Gangtok?
Shared jeeps from NJP and Siliguri are cheap but crowded, unpredictable
in departure times, and only drop you at Deorali — not your hotel.
The SNT state bus is affordable but slow and rigid. For a Himalayan
holiday that starts the moment you step off the train or plane, a
private NJP to Gangtok taxi is the only choice that
makes complete sense. Here is why:
-
Direct door-to-hotel drop in Gangtok: Shared jeeps
are legally permitted only up to Deorali — not
the city centre or your hotel. From Deorali you need another local
taxi at extra cost. Your EasyGoCab drops you directly at your hotel,
guesthouse, or any specific address in Gangtok. No transfer confusion.
No extra cost. No carrying bags up steep Gangtok lanes.
-
Bagdogra Airport pickup — seamless flight-to-hills transfer:
Bagdogra Airport (IXB) is the main airport for all
Sikkim-bound flights from Kolkata, Delhi, Guwahati, and Mumbai.
EasyGoCab provides direct, pre-booked Bagdogra Airport to
Gangtok cab service — your driver waits in the arrival hall
with your name displayed, handles your luggage, and gets you to
Gangtok in one smooth journey. One of the most in-demand bookings
in all of North Bengal.
-
Flexible stops along the Teesta route: The road
from NJP and Siliguri to Gangtok follows the Teesta River
for nearly 60 km — one of the most breathtaking river
drives in India. Your EasyGoCab can stop at Coronation
Bridge, Kalijhora, or Teesta
Bazaar for photographs and tea. Shared jeeps never stop.
Your private cab stops whenever you ask.
-
Essential for families and groups with luggage:
Shared jeeps carry up to 10 passengers and their luggage —
meaning very little space for bags. Families with children,
trekking gear, or more than 2 large suitcases simply cannot travel
comfortably in a shared vehicle. An EasyGoCab SUV or Innova Crysta
fits 6 to 7 passengers and all their luggage with space to spare.
-
No waiting, no uncertainty: Shared jeeps depart
only when full — and if you arrive at NJP at an unusual hour or
in off-season, you could wait 1 to 3 hours for the vehicle to fill
up. A pre-booked EasyGoCab is confirmed and waiting for you the
moment you arrive — at any hour of the day or night.
-
Safe, experienced mountain-route drivers:
The road from Siliguri to Gangtok via the Teesta Valley and up
through Rangpo and Singtam is mountain terrain — sharp curves,
narrow sections, and potentially slippery roads in monsoon and
winter. EasyGoCab drivers for this route are specifically
experienced in Himalayan hill driving. Your safety is never
an afterthought on this route.

About Gangtok – Queen of the Eastern Himalayas
Gangtok is the capital of Sikkim
and sits at an altitude of 1,650 metres in the
Eastern Himalayas. It is one of the cleanest, safest, and most
well-organised hill cities in all of India — with immaculate streets,
regulated traffic, a pedestrian-only promenade (MG Marg), and a warmth
of hospitality that is distinctly Sikkimese. The city offers a perfect
combination of Buddhist spiritual heritage, Himalayan adventure, and
alpine natural beauty — with the snow-capped
Kanchenjunga range (the world's third highest mountain)
visible in stunning clarity on clear days. Here is everything to
explore after your cab from NJP or Siliguri arrives:
-
Tsomgo Lake (Changu Lake) — The Sacred Glacial Lake
(38 km from Gangtok):
One of the most celebrated natural wonders in all of Sikkim,
Tsomgo Lake sits at a staggering
12,400 feet (3,753 metres) above sea level —
making it one of the highest lakes accessible by road in India.
The name means source of the lake in the Bhutia language.
The lake is roughly oval-shaped, about 1 km in length, and its
colour changes with the seasons — deep blue in summer, frozen and
ivory-white in December and January, and ringed with rhododendrons
in spring. The spiritual significance of Tsomgo is profound —
local legends hold that the colour of the lake's water predicts
the future, and Sikkimese shamans have used it for centuries for
divination rituals. Yak rides are available at
the lakeside for a classic high-altitude experience. A
Protected Area Permit (PAP) is required — easily
arranged through your hotel or a Gangtok travel agency. Combine
this with Baba Mandir on the same day for a full experience.
-
Nathula Pass — Standing at the India-China Border
(56 km from Gangtok at 14,140 feet):
One of the most thrilling, rare, and patriotic experiences
available to any Indian traveller. Nathula Pass
sits at 14,140 feet on the Indo-China border —
and was part of the ancient Silk Route that
connected India with Tibet for trade and diplomacy for centuries.
It is one of only three open border crossings between India and
China in the world. From the pass, you can look directly into
Tibet and observe Chinese military infrastructure on the other side.
The Indian Army post here is an immensely moving experience —
especially combined with a visit to the Baba Harbhajan
Singh Temple (see below). Note: Nathula is open only
on Wednesday to Sunday, is closed to
foreign nationals, and requires a special
PAP with Nathula extension booked 1 day in advance.
Roads can be snowbound from December to February. On clear days,
the views of the Himalayas from the pass are completely
unforgettable.
-
Baba Harbhajan Singh Temple — The Guardian of Nathula
(56 km from Gangtok):
Located between Tsomgo Lake and Nathula Pass on the high-altitude
road, the Baba Mandir is one of the most unique
and emotionally powerful places in India. It is dedicated to
Baba Harbhajan Singh — a soldier of the 23rd
Punjab Regiment who drowned in 1968 while escorting a mule column
near Nathula. According to the local belief of the Indian Army
soldiers posted here, Baba Harbhajan Singh's spirit continues to
guard the entire border area, appearing in the dreams of fellow
soldiers to warn them of danger. His unit still maintains a
vacant cot and his belongings — including boots that are
reportedly polished every night. Indian Army personnel revere
him deeply, and thousands of soldiers and civilians make the
pilgrimage here every year. The experience of visiting this temple
at nearly 14,000 feet, surrounded by snow-covered peaks and the
Indian Army's presence, is deeply stirring.
-
Rumtek Monastery — Sikkim's Largest Monastery
(24 km from Gangtok):
Built in 1966 by the 16th Karmapa
— the head of the Karma Kagyu sect of Tibetan Buddhism — Rumtek
Monastery is the largest monastery in Sikkim and one of the most
important centres of Tibetan Buddhism in the world outside Tibet.
Also known as Dharma Chakra Centre, the monastery
is a massive complex of temples, assembly halls, monks' quarters,
and golden pagodas built in traditional Tibetan style — decorated
with richly coloured murals, golden rooftops, and intricate
thangka paintings. The inner shrine houses a
golden stupa containing the relics of the 16th Karmapa
— one of the most sacred Buddhist relics in Sikkim.
The monastery complex also contains the Nalanda Institute
for higher Buddhist studies. A profound experience for
spiritual travellers, culture enthusiasts, and architecture lovers
alike. Open daily 9 AM to 6 PM.
-
MG Marg — The Heartbeat of Gangtok:
The Mahatma Gandhi Marg — known universally as
MG Marg — is Gangtok's main pedestrian promenade
and the social heart of the city. This beautifully maintained,
car-free street is lined with shops selling Sikkimese handicrafts,
Tibetan thangkas, prayer flags, and pashmina shawls; bakeries
serving momos and thukpa; and cafes with mountain views that
invite you to sit for hours. In the evening, MG Marg transforms
into a lively, lit-up promenade filled with families, tourists,
and local youth — with street food stalls and live music at
some cafes. No visit to Gangtok is complete without an evening
walk here. The Sikkim Tourism office is also
located on MG Marg — the best place to arrange permits for
Tsomgo Lake and Nathula.
-
Tashi Viewpoint — The Best Kanchenjunga View in Gangtok:
Located on the northern edge of Gangtok city, Tashi
Viewpoint offers one of the most famous panoramic views
in all of Sikkim — a sweeping vista of the Kanchenjunga
range (8,586 metres, world's 3rd highest peak), the
Siniolchu peak, and the entire Gangtok valley. On very clear
mornings — typically between October and December — the view
is magnificently sharp. The viewpoint also overlooks
Phodong and Labrang Monasteries in the valley
below. Ganesh Tok and Hanuman Tok
— two small but revered hilltop temples above the city — are
nearby and offer similarly spectacular views, especially at
sunrise. All three are usually combined in a single morning trip.
-
Enchey Monastery — 200 Years of Nyingma Buddhism:
Perched on a spur of land above Gangtok city, the
Enchey Monastery — built in the 1840s and
reconstructed in 1909 — is one of Sikkim's most important
Nyingma Buddhist monasteries. The name means Solitary Temple
in Tibetan. The monastery is set among tall pine trees with
panoramic views of the valley below. Prayer wheels line the
entrance path, and the interior is decorated with exquisite murals
of Buddhist deities. Every December, the famous
Chaam masked dance festival is performed here —
one of the most visually spectacular Buddhist festivals in all
of Sikkim. A peaceful and deeply atmospheric visit.
-
Gangtok Ropeway — A Cable Car Over the Himalayas:
The Gangtok Cable Car (Ropeway) runs between
Deorali and Tashiling — a 1 km aerial ride at an altitude of
around 1,800 metres, offering breathtaking 360-degree
views of Gangtok city, the surrounding valleys, and
on clear days the distant Kanchenjunga range. The ropeway stops
at Namnang, where you can step out and photograph the city from
above. Open daily 8 AM to 6 PM (closed Mondays). One of the
most popular family and couple activities in Gangtok. Visit in
the morning for the clearest mountain views.
-
Banjhakri Falls and Energy Park:
Located about 12 km from Gangtok city, Banjhakri Falls
is a beautiful 100-foot waterfall
surrounded by a unique landscaped park celebrating Sikkimese
folklore and the legend of the Banjhakri (forest shaman).
The park features life-sized sculptures depicting Sikkimese myths,
a bamboo grove, flowers, and adventure activities including a
zip line and a rope bridge over the waterfall. A perfect half-day
outing for families — especially with children who love the
sculptures, the waterfall mist, and the adventure zones.
-
Namgyal Institute of Tibetology — A Library of Lost Tibet:
Founded in 1958, the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology (NIT)
is one of the most important centres of Buddhist and
Tibetan studies in the world outside Tibet. The institute's
museum houses an extraordinary collection of rare Tibetan
manuscripts, thangka paintings, bronze statues, ritual objects,
and masks — many rescued from monasteries destroyed in Tibet
during the Cultural Revolution. The building itself is a
beautifully designed Tibetan structure with a peaceful garden.
For anyone interested in Tibetan history, art, or Buddhist
philosophy, this is one of Gangtok's most intellectually
rewarding destinations. Open Tuesday to Sunday, 10 AM to 4 PM.
The best time to visit Gangtok is
March to June (spring blooms, clear views, pleasant
weather) and September to November (post-monsoon
clarity, stunning Himalayan panoramas). For official Sikkim tourism
information, visit the
Sikkim Tourism official website.

Essential Travel Tips for the NJP / Siliguri to Gangtok Cab Journey
-
Keep your photo ID accessible at all times:
The Rangpo check-post at the Sikkim border is
mandatory for all passengers. Every adult must show a valid
government photo ID (Aadhaar, Voter ID, Passport, or Driving
License). Keep it in your pocket or day bag — not in the car boot.
Forgetting or misplacing your ID at Rangpo can cause significant
delays.
-
Depart from NJP or Siliguri by 8 AM for the best
journey: An 8 AM departure means you clear Siliguri
town traffic before it builds, pass through Rangpo before the
mid-morning queue, and arrive in Gangtok by 1 PM for a
comfortable check-in and afternoon exploration of MG Marg.
-
Book Tsomgo Lake and Nathula permits on arrival day:
Tsomgo Lake and Nathula Pass permits are arranged by
your hotel or a Gangtok travel agent — not at the sites
themselves. Arrange them on your first evening in
Gangtok for a next-day or day-after visit. Nathula Pass is
open only Wednesday to Sunday — plan accordingly.
-
Carry layers even in summer: Gangtok and
especially Tsomgo Lake and Nathula Pass are high-altitude
destinations. Even if Siliguri is 35°C when you depart, Gangtok
can be 15°C to 20°C and Nathula can drop to near-zero. Always
pack a warm layer and a light jacket — especially if you plan
high-altitude day trips.
-
Ask your driver to stop at Coronation Bridge:
About 55 km into the journey from NJP, the road passes the
iconic Coronation Bridge over the Teesta River.
The view of the turquoise Teesta from this historic suspension
bridge is genuinely spectacular. Ask your EasyGoCab driver to
stop for 10 minutes — it is one of the best photo moments of
the entire drive.
-
Monsoon season (July–August) — check roads before
departing: The Teesta Valley route is beautiful in
monsoon but can be disrupted by landslides. WhatsApp EasyGoCab
support before your journey during July–August for real-time
road condition updates. Departure before 7 AM on clear mornings
is generally safest during heavy monsoon weeks.
-
For altitude sickness — do not rush on Day 1:
Gangtok at 1,650 metres is unlikely to cause altitude sickness
for most people. But the day trips to Tsomgo (12,400 ft) and
Nathula (14,140 ft) are at very high altitudes. Rest on your
first day in Gangtok, stay hydrated, and avoid over-exertion
before your high-altitude day trips.
