Your Sikkim trip is ending. The mountains are behind you. Ahead lies
New Jalpaiguri (NJP) — the railway hub of North
Bengal — or Siliguri — the commercial gateway of the
Northeast — and from there, trains to Kolkata,
flights from Bagdogra Airport, and onward journeys to
every corner of India. The last leg from Gangtok to
NJP or Gangtok to Siliguri is approximately
114 to 124 km — a 4 to 4.5-hour drive through one of
the most beautiful river valleys in all of eastern India, alongside
the emerald-green Teesta River the entire way down.
This is not just the end of your Sikkim journey — it is one of the
finest drives you will take. The descent from Gangtok through the
Teesta Valley, crossing the dramatic gorge at Coronation
Bridge (Sevoke), and arriving at the wide plains of the Terai
— it is a visual and emotional finale that deserves to be experienced
in a comfortable, private cab rather than a cramped shared jeep.
At EasyGoCab,
we offer the most reliable Gangtok to NJP cab and
Gangtok to Siliguri cab service — fares starting at
₹3,199, price locked at booking, NJP train-timed
drops, Bagdogra Airport connection, door-to-door pickup from your
Gangtok hotel. Book in under 60 seconds at
easygocab.com.
Why Book a Private Cab from Gangtok to NJP or Siliguri?
Shared jeeps from Gangtok to NJP or Siliguri are available but depart
only when full — typically 10 passengers — and operate only until 1 PM
to 2 PM, after which no shared transport runs. They drop you at SNT
Bus Stand or NJP junction area — not at your specific platform or
hotel. Sikkim Nationalized Transport (SNT) buses are cheaper but take
5 to 6 hours with multiple stops. If you are catching a specific train
at NJP, a delayed shared jeep or a missed connection is a catastrophic
end to an otherwise perfect Sikkim holiday. A private Gangtok
to NJP taxi departs at your chosen time, runs non-stop, and
drops you at the exact NJP platform entrance — timed
to your train. Here is why EasyGoCab is the right choice:
-
NJP train-timed drop — the most critical transfer of your
North Bengal trip: New Jalpaiguri (NJP) Railway
Station is the departure point for trains to
Kolkata (Howrah) — 10+ daily trains, 7 to 9 hours —
as well as trains to Delhi, Chennai, Mumbai,
Dibrugarh, and every major Indian city. Missing your NJP
train after a Sikkim holiday means overnight stay costs, rebooking
fees, and an unnecessarily stressful end to the trip. EasyGoCab
schedules your Gangtok to NJP cab departure time
based on your exact train timing — accounting for the 4 to 4.5 hour
drive plus a 30-minute buffer for Rangpo checkpoint processing.
Enter your train number and departure time at
easygocab.com — your driver
calculates the correct Gangtok departure time and picks you up
accordingly.
-
Bagdogra Airport (IXB) connection — timed to your flight
departure: Bagdogra Airport (IXB) — 16 km
from Siliguri, operating flights to Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai,
Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Chennai — is the fastest way out of North
Bengal after a Sikkim trip. The drive from Gangtok to Bagdogra
Airport is approximately 130 to 140 km — 4.5 to 5
hours. EasyGoCab offers direct Gangtok to Bagdogra Airport
cab — enter your flight number at booking for live flight
tracking and precision timing. Arrive at the departures gate with
time to spare — never miss a flight at the end of a holiday.
-
Teesta Valley drive — one of eastern India's most beautiful
road journeys: The Gangtok to NJP / Siliguri cab
route runs for almost its entire length alongside the
Teesta River — one of the Himalayan rivers,
originating from the Cholamu Lake in North Sikkim at 5,330 metres
altitude, before descending through Sikkim and West Bengal to join
the Brahmaputra. The river alongside the road varies from a narrow,
roaring torrent in the upper reaches near Rangpo to a broad, swiftly
flowing jade-green river in the lower Teesta Valley approaching
Coronation Bridge. The changing colours of the Teesta — turquoise
near glacial tributaries, deep green in the monsoon, silver-grey in
winter morning light — are among the most photographically beautiful
moments of any North Bengal road journey. Your EasyGoCab driver
stops for photos on request — just ask.
-
Rangpo — Sikkim border checkpoint, the last moment in the
Himalayan Kingdom: At approximately 40 km from
Gangtok, the town of Rangpo marks the
boundary between Sikkim and West
Bengal — a checkpoint where all vehicles exiting Sikkim are
briefly registered. For Indian citizens, only a photo ID is required
— no Inner Line Permit for exiting. The checkpoint processing takes
5 to 10 minutes. Rangpo is the last point where Sikkim-registered
shops, the duty-free liquor advantage (Sikkim has lower excise duty
than West Bengal), and the mountain character of the journey are
still visible. After Rangpo, the hills flatten rapidly into the
Terai plains. It is worth pausing at Rangpo for a few minutes — the
last mountain air of Sikkim.
-
Coronation Bridge (Sevoke) — the finale of the Teesta Valley
drive: At approximately 90 km from Gangtok
— and 40 km from NJP — the road crosses the Teesta
River at Sevoke on the famous
Coronation Bridge. Built in 1937
to commemorate the coronation of King George VI, the single-arch
bridge spans the Teesta where it narrows between forested hills and
the river runs fast and deep in a dramatic gorge. The view from the
bridge — Teesta below, forested hills in every direction, the plains
beginning just ahead — is one of the most beautiful single
viewpoints in all of North Bengal. Ask your EasyGoCab driver for a
10-minute photo stop at Coronation Bridge. The light is best in the
early morning — golden and clear.
-
Pakyong Airport (PYG) — Sikkim's own airport, 30 km from
Gangtok: Pakyong Airport (IATA: PYG) —
located 30 km south of Gangtok, opened in 2018 — is India's highest
greenfield airport at 1,396 metres above sea level.
It currently operates limited domestic flights from Kolkata and
Delhi — subject to weather and season. For travellers with a Pakyong
Airport departure, EasyGoCab provides direct Gangtok to
Pakyong Airport cab — the shortest and most convenient
airport transfer from Gangtok, just 30 to 40 minutes of drive.
WhatsApp us for the Pakyong fare, and always confirm your flight is
operating on your date as services can be irregular.
-
24/7 availability — early morning departures for morning
trains at NJP: Many NJP–Howrah trains depart between 5 AM
and 9 AM. For a 7 AM train departure at NJP, your Gangtok cab needs
to depart by 2 AM to 2:30 AM from Gangtok to arrive
with buffer time. EasyGoCab operates every hour of every day —
pre-dawn departures at no extra charge. Enter your NJP train time at
booking — EasyGoCab calculates your precise Gangtok departure time.

Best Route — Via NH10 (Teesta Valley Highway):
Gangtok → Ranipool → Singtam → Rangpo (Sikkim–West Bengal border) →
Teesta Bazar → Coronation Bridge (Sevoke) → Siliguri → NJP (New
Jalpaiguri). NH10 runs the entire length of the
Teesta Valley — entering Sikkim at Rangpo and climbing alongside the
river all the way to Gangtok. The route is mountainous for the first
40 km (Gangtok to Rangpo), then transitions to foothills, and then
to the flat Terai plains for the final 30 km into Siliguri and NJP.
The Teesta River accompanies you for most of the journey — visible
and sometimes audible from the road.
-
Key Milestones on Route: Ranipool (8 km) · Singtam
(24 km) · Rangpo — Sikkim border checkpoint (40 km) · Teesta Bazar
(50 km) · Coronation Bridge / Sevoke (82–90 km) · Siliguri (110–118
km) · NJP (120–124 km) · Bagdogra Airport (130–140 km)
-
Road Condition: Mountain road from Gangtok to
Rangpo — NH10 is mostly two-lane on the Sikkim side, well-maintained
but with hairpin bends and steep sections. Your EasyGoCab driver is
experienced on this mountain route. After Rangpo into West Bengal —
road condition improves to a wider, faster highway approaching
Siliguri. Monsoon season (June to September) can bring occasional
landslides on the Sikkim side — your driver will have real-time
updates and will take the safest available route.
-
Rangpo Checkpoint — allow 10 minutes: All vehicles
exiting Sikkim are registered at Rangpo. For Indian citizens, a
photo ID (Aadhaar, passport, or driving licence) is all that is
required. The process takes 5 to 10 minutes. This checkpoint time is
already factored into EasyGoCab's estimated travel time — no
surprises.
-
Best Departure Time — Based on NJP Train: Work
backwards from your train departure time at NJP. Allow 4.5 hours of
travel + 30 minutes buffer + 30 minutes at NJP station before the
train. For a 7 AM NJP train: depart Gangtok by 2
AM. For a 10 AM NJP train: depart Gangtok by 5 AM.
For a 2 PM NJP train: depart Gangtok by 8:30 AM.
EasyGoCab calculates this automatically when you enter your train
time at booking.

Top Places to Visit in Gangtok Before Your Departure
If your checkout is on departure day and you have a few morning hours
before your Gangtok to NJP cab departs — here is what
to experience in Gangtok one last time:
-
MG Marg — The Most Beautiful Pedestrian Promenade in
Eastern India: The Mahatma Gandhi Marg —
Gangtok's car-free pedestrian boulevard — is one of the cleanest and
most pleasant urban streets in all of India. Lined with cafes,
bakeries, shops selling Sikkim handicrafts, and flower-decorated
lamp posts with views of the forested hillsides above the city — MG
Marg is best experienced in the early morning before your departure,
when the mist hangs over the hills and the street is quiet. The
Sikkim Government Museum at the end of MG Marg has
a small but well-curated collection of Sikkimese art, costumes, and
history.
-
Rumtek Monastery — The Seat of the Kagyu Lineage of Tibetan
Buddhism: Rumtek Monastery — 24 km from
Gangtok — is the largest monastery in Sikkim and one of the most
important centres of Karma Kagyu Tibetan Buddhism
outside Tibet. Built by the 16th Karmapa in the 1960s after he fled
Tibet, Rumtek houses the Black Crown — the most
sacred object of the Kagyu lineage — and relics of the 16th Karmapa
himself. The monastery complex — golden-roofed, prayer-flag lined,
set against the backdrop of forested hills with Kanchenjunga visible
on clear days — is one of the most atmospherically beautiful
religious sites in all of eastern India. Allow 1.5 hours.
Photography permitted in the courtyard. No non-vegetarian food near
the monastery complex.
-
Tsomgo (Changu) Lake — 12,400 Feet Above Sea Level:
Tsomgo Lake (also called Changu
Lake) — 35 km from Gangtok at 3,780 metres (12,400
feet) altitude — is a glacial lake of extraordinary beauty:
deep blue-green in summer, frozen in winter, surrounded by
rhododendron forest and alpine meadows. The lake changes colour with
the seasons — from deep blue in October to ice-white in January. The
Baba Mandir (the shrine of Baba Harbhajan Singh,
the Indian soldier who, according to legend, still protects the
border) is located en route to Tsomgo and Nathula Pass — about 52 km
from Gangtok. Foreign nationals require a Protected Area
Permit (PAP) for Tsomgo and Nathula. Indian citizens
require no permit for Tsomgo — but Nathula Pass requires an advance
permit obtained through a registered Sikkim tour operator.
-
Nathula Pass — 14,140 Feet, the India-China Border:
Nathula Pass at 4,310 metres (14,140
feet) — the India–China border crossing in Sikkim — is one
of the highest motorable passes in the world and the point where
Indian and Chinese soldiers stand face to face across a low fence.
The pass was part of the ancient Silk Road route between India and
China and was a key trade route for centuries before the 1962 war
closed it. It was reopened for trade in 2006. The view from Nathula
— snow peaks in every direction, the Chinese military installations
visible on the other side — is extraordinary. Day trip from
Gangtok: 56 km each way. Advance permit required for both Indian and
foreign nationals — apply at least 2 days before through a
Gangtok-registered operator. Permit not obtainable on the
day. EasyGoCab can arrange a Nathula day trip from Gangtok
— WhatsApp us for local operator coordination.
-
Enchey Monastery — 200-Year-Old Monastery Above Gangtok
City: Enchey Monastery — built in 1909 on
the site of a hermitage established over 200 years ago by the Lama
Druptob Karpo — sits on a spur of the hillside above Gangtok at
1,870 metres altitude. Belonging to the Nyingma order of
Tibetan Buddhism, Enchey is famous for its annual
Chaam dance festival — masked ritualistic dances
performed by monks to drive away evil — held every January. The
monastery has stunning views of the Sikkim hills and, on clear days,
distant snow peaks. 10 minutes from MG Marg by car — the ideal
early-morning visit before a departure day Gangtok to NJP
cab.
-
Kanchenjunga View — Dawn from Tashi Viewpoint:
Kanchenjunga — at 8,586 metres,
the world's third-highest mountain and sacred guardian deity of
Sikkim — is visible from Gangtok on clear days, towering above the
lower ranges in a blaze of permanent snow. The best views are from
Tashi Viewpoint, 5 km from Gangtok city, at
sunrise (5:30 AM to 6:30 AM) — when the first light
catches the snow peaks and turns them gold and pink before the
clouds build. On departure day, ask EasyGoCab to depart via Tashi
Viewpoint for a 10-minute Kanchenjunga sunrise farewell before the
drive to NJP begins.
