Malda — the Mango City of Bengal — is one of
West Bengal's most historically rich and culturally layered destinations.
Sitting at the confluence of the Mahananda and Kalindi rivers
in northern West Bengal, Malda is the gateway to some of the most
extraordinary medieval ruins in all of India. The ancient capitals of
Gour and Pandua — which once ruled
all of Bengal through three great dynasties — lie right on its doorstep.
And every summer, Malda's legendary Himsagar and Gopalbhog
mangoes draw visitors from across the country for one of
Bengal's most delicious seasonal celebrations.
Malda is approximately 330 km from Kolkata by road.
By cab via NH12, the journey takes around
7 to 8 hours — a long but deeply rewarding drive
through the heart of Bengal, past the historic city of
Murshidabad and the mighty Farakka Barrage
on the Ganga.
At EasyGoCab,
we offer the most reliable and affordable
Kolkata to Malda cab service — with fixed fares,
verified drivers, tolls included, and zero hidden charges. Book in
under 60 seconds. Starting at just ₹3,299.
Why Book a Private Cab from Kolkata to Malda?
Trains to Malda are popular but not always available at short notice —
especially during the Mango Festival season or on weekends. Buses are
slow and uncomfortable for a 330 km journey. A private
Kolkata to Malda taxi gives you total flexibility,
real comfort, and the freedom to plan your own journey. Here is why
thousands of travellers choose it every month:
-
Door-to-door pickup and drop: Your EasyGoCab driver
picks you up from your home, hotel, or office anywhere in Kolkata
and drops you directly at your Malda destination — hotel, the Gour
ruins entrance, or any specific address. No last-mile transport
uncertainty at the far end of a long journey.
-
The best way to travel during Mango Festival season:
Every May and June, Malda hosts the celebrated
Malda Mango Festival — and the entire district
comes alive with mango orchards in full harvest. Trains during
this period are packed weeks in advance. A pre-booked EasyGoCab
ensures you never miss the season's most delicious event.
-
Plan a Murshidabad en-route stop: The historic
city of Murshidabad — former capital of the Nawabs
of Bengal and home to the magnificent Hazarduari Palace
— sits almost exactly halfway on the Kolkata to Malda
route. Your EasyGoCab can stop here for 2 to 3 hours of sightseeing
before continuing to Malda. One trip, two magnificent destinations.
Just mention it at the time of booking or WhatsApp us for a
multi-stop fare.
-
Essential for heritage and archaeology enthusiasts:
Gour and Pandua — the ancient ruined capitals near Malda — are
spread across a wide area that requires a vehicle to cover properly.
Your EasyGoCab can serve as your local sightseeing vehicle in
Malda, covering all heritage sites at your own pace.
-
Gateway to North Bengal: Malda sits on the main
route from Kolkata to North Bengal. Travellers heading to
Siliguri, NJP, Darjeeling, or Sikkim can use
Malda as an excellent overnight stop — breaking the long journey
into a comfortable two-day road trip. EasyGoCab can arrange
multi-day, multi-city itinerary cabs on request.
-
24/7 availability — every day of the year:
EasyGoCab operates round the clock. Early morning departure to
beat Kolkata traffic? Late night return? We are always ready —
no extra charge for odd hours.

About Malda – Bengal's Mango City and Medieval Capital
Malda — also known as English Bazaar
(from the English factory established here in 1771) — is one of West
Bengal's oldest and most historically significant districts. Situated
at the confluence of the Mahananda and Kalindi rivers in the northern
part of the state, Malda was the seat of three great dynasties that
ruled all of Bengal: the Buddhist Palas, the
Hindu Senas, and the Muslim Nawabs of the
Bengal Sultanate. Their ruined capitals —
Gour and Pandua — sit just outside
the modern city and are among the most important archaeological sites
in all of India. Malda is also, of course, Bengal's undisputed
Mango Capital — home to the legendary Himsagar and
Gopalbhog mango varieties that are famous across India and exported
globally. Here is everything to explore after arriving by
cab from Kolkata:
-
Gour — Ancient Capital of Bengal (12 km from Malda):
Gour is one of the most extraordinary archaeological
sites in India — a vast, silent landscape of medieval ruins along the
banks of the Ganga, near the Bangladesh border. Once the magnificent
capital of the Bengal Sultanate (14th to 16th century), Gour was a
city of palaces, mosques, towers, and fortified walls — compared by
medieval travellers to the great cities of the Islamic world. Today
its ruins stretch for kilometres through bamboo groves and paddy
fields, and the site has been studied by archaeologists for over
150 years. Within the Gour ruins, the must-see monuments are the
Dakhil Darwaza, Baroduari Mosque,
Firoz Minar, Lattan Mosque,
Kadam Rasul Mosque, Lukochuri Gate,
and Kotwali Darwaza — each a remarkable piece of
15th and 16th century Bengal architecture. A full half-day is needed
to cover Gour properly.
-
Dakhil Darwaza — The Gateway of Glory (Gour):
The crown jewel of Gour's ruins — Dakhil Darwaza
(also called Salaami Darwaza) was built in 1425 AD
by Sultan Alauddin Husain Shah as the grand ceremonial entrance to
the royal palace of Gour. Rising dramatically from the flat terrain,
this magnificent gateway of rich red brick stands
34 metres tall, with four five-storey corner towers,
exquisite terracotta decorations, and multiple arched passages. It
is the best-preserved and most iconic structure in the entire Gour
complex — and one of the finest examples of Bengal Sultanate
architecture that exists anywhere in the world today. Surrounded
by a well-maintained garden, it is the first and most essential
stop in Gour. Listed under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
Open daily 9 AM to 6 PM. Entry fee ₹25.
-
Firoz Minar — Malda's Qutub Minar (Gour):
Standing 26 metres tall and built between 1485 and
1489 AD during the rule of Sultan Saifuddin Firuz Shah of the Habshi
dynasty, the Firoz Minar is the most striking vertical
monument in Gour. Located just 1 km from Dakhil Darwaza, the Minar
is a five-storey tower with a distinctive design — the lower three
floors are twelve-sided (dodecagonal) and the upper two are circular,
topped with a flat terrace. The exterior is richly decorated with
terracotta panels. Often called the Qutub Minar of Malda,
the tower once had a spiral staircase to the top that offered a
panoramic view of the entire ruined city of Gour. An absolutely
unmissable stop.
-
Adina Mosque — Largest Mosque in Bengal (Pandua, 20 km
from Malda):
Built in 1364 to 1374 AD by Sultan Sikandar Shah
of the Ilyas Shahi dynasty, the Adina Mosque in
Pandua was at the time of its construction the
largest mosque in the entire Indian subcontinent.
Its design — a massive rectangular complex with a vast open
courtyard, 378 pillars arranged in rows, double-height arched
bays, and a roof with 88 domes — shows strong influences of Arab,
Persian, Byzantine, and Bengali architectural traditions. Though
much of the roof has collapsed over the centuries, the sheer scale
of what remains is absolutely breathtaking. The Sultan's tomb
chamber, attached to the western wall, is an especially beautiful
and intimate space within this immense structure. The mosque
resembles the Great Mosque of Damascus in layout. A must-visit
for anyone interested in medieval Islamic architecture.
-
Eklakhi Mausoleum — Bengal's First Brick Tomb (Pandua):
Located in Pandua, the Eklakhi Mausoleum (built
1412 to 1415 AD) is the tomb of Jalaluddin Muhammad Shah, Sultan
of Bengal. Its name means "one lakh" — referring to the enormous
sum supposedly spent on its construction. It is considered one of
the earliest examples of brick tomb architecture in Bengal
and a landmark in the development of Bengali Islamic
architecture. A unique detail: a carved Hindu idol is visible on
the front door lintel — a fascinating reminder of the religious
syncretism of medieval Bengal. The building is a single, square,
domed structure of great elegance and proportion.
-
Malda Museum — 1,500 Years of Bengal History:
Located on Bandh Road in Malda town, the Malda Museum
(established 1937) is a compact but extraordinary
museum housing a rich collection of artefacts from the Gour and
Pandua sites — including terracotta plaques and brick mouldings
from demolished mosques, glazed tiles in brilliant turquoise and
cobalt blue, stone sculptures dating back to the Pala period
(8th to 12th century), coins from multiple dynasties, and
anthropological specimens documenting 1,500 years of continuous
human history in Malda district. For anyone seriously interested
in Gour and Pandua's history, visiting the museum before or after
the ruins is essential — it provides the context that brings the
silent ruins alive. Open Tuesday to Sunday, 10 AM to 5 PM.
-
Jagjivanpur Buddhist Monastery Ruins (35 km from Malda):
One of the most important and least-visited archaeological sites
in West Bengal — the Nandadirghika-Udranga Mahavihara
at Jagjivanpur is a 9th-century Buddhist monastery complex
of the Pala dynasty. Discovered in 1987 following the unearthing of
a copper plate inscription of Pala Emperor Mahendrapaladeva, the
excavation revealed the structural remains of a large Buddhist
Vihara — including monks' cells, a central courtyard shrine, terracotta
plaques, and a beautifully carved bronze image of Vajrasattva.
The ASI-protected site is relatively uncrowded and deeply fascinating
for history enthusiasts, archaeologists, and Buddhist heritage travellers.
An unmissable add-on for anyone visiting Malda.
-
Ramkeli — Sri Chaitanya's Sacred Stop (14 km from Malda):
Located 14 km south of Malda on the way to Gour, the small village
of Ramkeli is famous across Bengal as the place
where Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu — the great
Vaishnava saint and social reformer of Bengal — stopped on his way
to Vrindavan during the reign of Sultan Hussain Shah. The ancient
Tamaltola — a sacred old Tamal tree under which Chaitanya is believed
to have rested — is a revered spot. The village has a beautiful
annual Mela held on the occasion of Snana Yatra (June/July). A
spiritually significant and peaceful detour from the main Gour circuit.
-
Adina Deer Park (20 km from Malda):
Located adjacent to the Adina Mosque ruins in Pandua, the
Adina Deer Park is a pleasant green retreat spanning
several acres of forest. Home to spotted deer (chital), barking
deer, and a variety of resident and migratory birds, it is a
favourite picnic and nature walk destination for Malda families and
visitors. Walking through the shaded grounds of this park adjacent
to one of Bengal's greatest medieval mosques creates a uniquely
poetic combination of nature and heritage.
-
Malda Mango Festival — Bengal's Sweetest Celebration:
Every year in May and June, Malda hosts the
Malda Mango Festival — a celebration of the
district's extraordinary mango varieties including the legendary
Himsagar, Gopalbhog,
Langra, Fazli, and
Lakshman Bhog. The festival draws visitors from
across West Bengal and beyond who come to taste, buy, and marvel
at Malda's mango culture. The district produces over
3.5 lakh metric tonnes of mangoes annually — the
highest in West Bengal. Mango orchards stretch as far as the eye
can see. If you are visiting during May or June, the mango experience
alone makes the Kolkata to Malda cab trip completely
worthwhile.
The best time to visit Malda is October to
March for heritage tourism — cool weather, clear skies, and
comfortable sightseeing at Gour and Pandua. For the Mango
Festival, visit in May or June when the
orchards are in full harvest. For official tourism information, visit
the Malda District Government tourism page.

Smart Travel Tips for the Kolkata to Malda Road Trip
-
Start by 5 AM to 6 AM for the best journey:
An early departure clears Kolkata's dense morning traffic near
Barasat and Krishnanagar before it builds. You will reach
Murshidabad by mid-morning — perfect for a 2-hour heritage stop —
and arrive in Malda comfortably by early afternoon.
-
Stop at Murshidabad — do not skip it:
Hazarduari Palace — the 1,000-doored palace of
the Nawabs of Bengal — sits exactly halfway on your Kolkata to Malda
route. It is one of Bengal's most spectacular heritage buildings.
A 2 to 3 hour stop costs nothing extra on your cab fare and makes
this the best value heritage road trip in West Bengal. Tell your
EasyGoCab driver at the time of booking.
-
Allocate a full day for Gour and Pandua separately:
Gour and Pandua are separate areas — Gour is 12 km from
Malda and Pandua is 20 km away, in a different direction. Covering
both properly takes a full day. Plan at least 2 nights in Malda
to do both justice without rushing.
-
Visit during October to March for heritage tourism:
The weather is cool, the ruins are lit beautifully in winter light,
and the surrounding countryside is green and scenic. Avoid
April to June for heritage visits — the heat can be exhausting.
-
Visit in May to June for the mangoes:
Yes, it is hot — but Malda's mango season (Himsagar and Gopalbhog)
is one of Bengal's greatest food experiences. If you love mangoes,
visiting in late May or early June is absolutely worth it. Start
your Kolkata departure early at 5 AM to avoid the worst of the heat.
-
Carry cash — ATMs can be unreliable near Gour ruins:
The Gour and Pandua sites are rural and distant from the main town.
ATMs near the ruins are rare and often out of cash. Carry sufficient
cash for entry fees (₹25 per site), guides, food, and local transport.
Withdraw from an ATM in Malda town before visiting the ruins.
-
Book a Sedan or SUV for this 330 km journey:
A 7 to 8 hour drive deserves proper legroom and suspension comfort.
We recommend a Swift Dzire or Ertiga over a hatchback for the
Kolkata to Malda route. The fare difference is small and the
comfort difference over 7 hours is significant.
