Purulia is West Bengal's westernmost district — red soil, rocky hills, forests of sal and palash, and quiet tribal villages along the Jharkhand border. Its best-known corner is Ayodhya Pahar, a forested plateau on the Jharkhand border with dams, waterfalls and wide viewpoints over the plains. This is also the home of the Purulia Chhau dance — part of the Chhau tradition on UNESCO's list of Intangible Cultural Heritage — and of Charida, the village whose hand-made Chhau masks carry a GI tag.
Purulia's attractions are spread out — dams, falls and viewpoints sit kilometres apart on the hill, and Garh Panchkot and Baranti are on the other side of the district. That is why most visitors from Kolkata come by car: one cab takes you from your door to the hill and, if you keep it, around every spot.
| Option | Best for | Things to know |
|---|---|---|
| Train (Howrah → Purulia) | One or two travellers going to Purulia town | You still need a car from the station to Ayodhya Pahar (about 40 km) and for sightseeing. |
| Bus (SBSTC and private) | Budget solo travel | The cheapest option, but long and with no door drop. Local transport on the hill is limited. |
| Private cab (EasyGoCab) | Families, friends' groups, photographers, palash-season weekends | Door to resort, stops at Garh Panchkot or Baranti, and the same car for hill sightseeing if you book a round trip. |
Good breaks on the way: Shaktigarh (about 70 km, Langcha), Bardhaman (about 120 km) and Durgapur for a proper meal. After Asansol, food stops are simpler, so plan lunch before you leave NH19.
EasyGoCab shows the full price before you book. All tolls, driver allowance, night charges and GST are inside the quote, and the fare is locked once you confirm — nothing extra at a toll booth or at your resort.
